A Sunday drone attack on an Israeli military base near the town of Binyamina, which was carried out by Hezbollah, has killed four Israeli soldiers and severely wounded seven others. Hezbollah has taken responsibility for the attack, stating that it is retaliation for Israel’s Thursday strikes on Beirut, which killed 22.
The attack was carried out by two drones, which entered Israeli airspace from the sea and were tracked by Israeli radar. One was shot down off the coast, but the other dipped off the radar and was assumed to have crashed until it struck the base.
According to Israel’s national rescue service, a total of 61 Israelis were wounded in the attack.
After the attack, Hezbollah released a statement threatening Israel with further attacks, should Israel continue its military operations in Southern Lebanon. Per the statement, Hezbollah “promises the enemy that what it witnessed today in southern Haifa is nothing compared to what awaits it if it decides to continue its aggression against our noble and dear people.”
The attack comes the same day as the Pentagon confirmed that the U.S. will deploy a high-tech missile defense system, the Terminal High Altitude Aerial Defense system, to Israel. This system will be manned by 100 U.S. service members in the first deployment of American troops to Israel since the October 7 attacks last year.
