Trump says his $355m fraud penalty is ‘a form of Navalny’

Donald Trump again compared his own legal struggles to the shocking fate of the late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny during a Fox News town hall event in South Carolina on Tuesday evening.

The former president gave a typically lively performance during the interview with Laura Ingraham, in which he discussed his various ongoing court cases and said his recent order to pay out $355m in financial penalties to the state of New York amounted to “a form of Navalny”, adding: “It is a form of communism or fascism.”

Despite Mr Trump’s brief praise of Navalny as “very brave”, it has emerged that the political activist was less than complimentary about him, having issued a chilling warning about what a second Trump administration could mean for the world in one of his final letters to a friend.

Elsewhere at the town hall, Mr Trump declared he would commit to debating Joe Biden “as many [times] as necessary” should he secure the Republican presidential nomination, having shirked the debate stage as a GOP candidate, but was unable to point to any evidence of “corruption” in President Biden’s background, despite House Republicans’ dubious impeachment investigation continuing.

Haley vows ‘I’m not going anywhere’ ahead of South Carolina primary

Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley delivered a defiant speech ahead of her home state’s primary on Saturday and insisted that she will not quit the 2024 race even if she loses.

Haley, who won two terms as governor of the Palmetto State, insisted that she does not fear Trump’s retribution and is in it for the long haul

“South Carolina will vote on Saturday. But on Sunday, I’ll still be running for president. I’m not going anywhere,” she said in Greenville on Tuesday at a press conference at which reporters had assembled fully expecting her to announce that she was suspending her campaign, seeing no path to victory.

Biden reportedly tells campaign to highlight ‘crazy s***’ Trump says

Joe Biden has reportedly told his campaign aides to hone in on Trump’s more extreme comments and statements, to highlight the differences between the two 2024 frontrunners.

Sources told CNN that Biden wanted Trump’s “crazy s***” highlighted in an effort to show he is unfit to regain the White House, following months of the Republican trying to disparage Biden in a similar way.

Here are a few more clips from another incoherent, uninformative and policy-light performance from the man who would be president.

When asked if Trump has become more dangerous, compared to when he was president, Ms Trump said “yes” and said her uncle is “increasingly unhinged”. Trump wants to know who he should pick as running mate

The likes of New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik, South Carolina senator Tim Scott, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem and Arkansas governor and one-time Trump White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, have all been linked to the role in recent weeks but Mr Trump has reed uncharacteristically tight-lipped, saying only that it will definitely not be GOP rival Nikki Haley or Mike Pence this time around.

Nancy Pelosi urges ‘grotesque’ Donald Trump to have intervention

Nancy Pelosi believes Donald Trump needs an “intervention” – and has described the former US president as “grotesque”. The veteran Democrat added that there is “no use” in talking to Mr Trump “because he is just in a world of his own”. “Have an intervention into your mental health, your political viability,” Ms Pelosi said of her political rival. “He is really grotesque, and it is really a shame… He has ventured into the global scene by his chumminess with [Vladimir] Putin.”
