A Missouri man beat up a victim in a grocery store aisle after telling him to “go back to your f—ing country” and then ranted to cops that “foreigners are taking over,” an arrest affidavit said.
The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls of a fight in a Diebergs market in the 12500 block of Olive Boulevard at around 6 p.m. Friday. Deputies encountered the defendant, later identified as 31-year-0ld Shawn Singer, and placed him in handcuffs. He initially said he wasn’t saying anything else — but he apparently kept talking.

He allegedly said “I’m tired of foreigners, man. Walking all over the place, making our money cost so much more than it should. F—ing people trampling over us. I’m next f—ing going to China to take them down because they were part of the covid vaccine, virus.” Cops spoke with the victim who told them he was shopping down an aisle when Singer approached him from the opposite way. Singer mumbled something the victim didn’t understand as he passed, the affidavit said.
When the victim asked if Singer said something, the suspect allegedly retorted “Go back to your f—ing country.” The victim asked what he ever did to the defendant. That’s when cops say that singer raised his fists and swung at the victim. The victim fell down while trying to avoid the punches, and Singer allegedly started hitting the victim’s face and upper body.
A bystander tried to intervene but couldn’t pull Singer off, according to the affidavit. The defendant stopped when someone told him cops were coming. Singer wasn’t particularly contrite when talking with cops. He made the following statements, per the affidavit:
- “Don’t blame this on me, man, there’s people who are from other countries that are taking jobs away from us”
- “I’m speaking about jobs in construction, jobs in workplace, foreigners are taking over”
- “Why you such a punk, man? Can’t you see what I’m trying to do? People from other countries trying to take our jobs.”
Police transported Singer to the St. Louis County Jail on a charge of fourth-degree assault motivated by discrimination, a felony. It did not appear Singer was an inmate in the jail as of Monday afternoon.
