A 45-year-old wife had a lengthy argument with her cheating husband after going shopping for a Labor Day barbecue and then shot him to death at their Florida home, not believing him when he said he was going out with “friends,” cops in Coral Springs allege.
The Coral Springs Police Department said it first learned of the shooting when a male juvenile, a 14-year-old boy at the scene with his twin brother, called 911 around 6:32 p.m. on Aug. 31, Saturday on Labor Day weekend, and said his father was shot but still breathing at their home on Northwest 43rd Street.
Around five minutes later, two cops got to the home, started shouting “loud verbal commands for the occupants to exit,” and got the twins to safety, as suspect Denise Nicole Malcolm remained inside.
“Officers quickly arrived on scene. They gave verbal commands inside the residence, at which time two juveniles did exit the residence,” Police Chief Bradley McKeone said in a video update. Moments later, however, there was a “loud bang,” the gunshot that authorities allege to be the one that killed 52-year-old Rohan Malcolm.
After the suspect exited the house and was detained, cops found the victim “lying on his back in a bedroom with multiple gun shot wounds to his body” and “blood pooling underneath him,” detailed a police report obtained by Law&Crime. “They checked his pulse for signs of life but did not find any.”
The teen who called 911 then told investigators that he was “eating Chinese food and listening to music with his headphones on” in his bedroom when he “suddenly heard two or three loud bangs,” ran out of the room, and saw his mother “standing in the doorway with a handgun in her hand,” and saw that his father had been shot in the shoulder, documents said.
Cops said the boy revealed that he considered his parents “estranged,” that they “slept in separate bedrooms,” and that the two “frequently argued” about his father’s “involvement with other women.”
The police report indicates that his twin brother was on the couch in the living room when he heard two or three gunshots and then ran into the garage as his sibling called the cops, leading minutes later to their safe exit from the home as defendant Malcolm allegedly fired one more shot and killed her husband.
After Denise Malcolm was taken into custody and read her Miranda rights, she allegedly told cops that her husband had been “unfaithful” for the last two years, that the two “slept in separate bedrooms and frequently engaged in heated altercations,” and that she was “at her wits’ end with his lies and deceit.”
The existing tension in the relationship turned violent, and with fatal consequences, after a Labor Day barbecue-related shopping trip, when Rohan Malcolm “unexpectedly announced that he was leaving to go to Port Saint Lucie with his friends,” the suspect allegedly said.
Denise Malcolm apparently interpreted going elsewhere with “friends” to mean seeing another woman.
After some 45 minutes to an hour of “heated” argument, the suspect allegedly got a gun out of her bedroom closet and shot her husband “multiple times” as she stood in the doorway of his room.
When cops closed in, the suspect allegedly said that she thought about taking her own life but took a different course of action when her wounded husband “said something to her that made her stop her thoughts of suicide and shoot him for a final time.”
From there, Denise Malcolm is accused of leaving the murder weapon on a dresser and walking out of the house to be placed under arrest.
Broward County Jail records show that Malcolm reminds behind bars with out bond as she faces the premeditated murder case.
