Michigan authorities say a man who murdered two people over an $80 dice game used a rather unusual method to try and suppress the noise of gunshots.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday to 911 calls about a shooting at an apartment complex in the 100 block of North Sanford Street near Fiddis Avenue in Pontiac. When deputies arrived, they located two people suffering from multiple gunshot wounds: Sidney Ward III, 20, and Tyrone Davis Glenn Jr., 24. Paramedics pronounced Ward dead on the scene and rushed Glenn to the hospital where he died.
Detectives learned that the suspect had left the area in an Uber. The suspect ran away near South Boulevard and Woodward Avenue before cops could find the car. Officers recovered two handguns, the press release said.
There was also a “futile attempt” by the suspect to use a potato as a silencer.
“And it didn’t work obviously because we got calls from people about hearing gunshots,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told Detroit Fox affiliate WJBK.
An investigation revealed that a 32-year-old Detroit man became upset after he lost $80 in a dice game. Deputies spotted the suspect walking on the sidewalk of 8 Mile Road. He was carrying two grocery bags and a case of beer around 8:30 p.m. — roughly 12 hours after the shooting occurred. Members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team and the Gun Violence Task Force arrested the suspect and took him into custody. Cops turned over their case to prosecutors who will formally charge the suspect with murder. His name has not been publicly released. He remains at the Oakland County Jail.
“I am super proud of our substation, all our detectives and our partners for the effort that brought this cold-blooded killer into custody within 12 hours,” Bouchard said in a statement. “I have been in this a long time, but it is still shocking to see the lack of value some people place on a human life. I look forward to him being brought to the bar of justice and held accountable.”
