Teen seeking perfect homecoming photo shoot spot gets shot in face by town council member while asking to use his property, police say

A Colorado town council member is accused of shooting a teenager — who was hoping to use the man’s property for a high school homecoming photo shoot — in the face.

Brent Metz, 38, allegedly opened fire as two teens sat in a car on the other side of his property line on Tuesday, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Deputies say they were dispatched to the home on an emergency call to report trespassers.

Deputies found two cars on the side of the road near Metz’s property, the statement said. As one deputy approached, he could see “a juvenile male bleeding heavily from his face.”

A second teen was applying pressure to the injured boy’s face wounds with a T-shirt, the statement said. Metz was standing with the two boys at the time.

“The victim told the deputy that Metz shot him through the windshield of his car, causing the injuries to his face,” the statement said.

The sheriff’s office said that the teens had tried to reach Metz at home after scoping out his property as a potential place to memorialize a high school tradition.

“Prior to being taken by ambulance to the hospital, the victim told the deputy that he and his friend drove to this property to see if they could use this location to take homecoming pictures,” the statement said. “The boys parked at the home’s gate, jumped the fence, and walked up the driveway to speak to the homeowner. No one appeared to be at the residence, so the boys walked around the property trying to locate a homeowner to no avail.”

Unsuccessful, the boys returned to their car and started writing a note to the homeowner asking permission to use the property for pictures, the statement says.

That’s when Metz allegedly fired at them.

“[A] man they had never seen before pulled up next to them, exited the truck he was driving, and fired a round through the windshield, striking the 17-year-old driver in the face,” the sheriff’s office said.

The weapon was found inside Metz’s truck. The boy was reportedly still in the hospital as of Wednesday.

According to The Colorado Sun, one of the teens told law enforcement that Metz exclaimed “My gun went off!” after the shooting.

The sheriff’s office told local Fox affiliate KDVR that the boys were not trespassing at the time Metz allegedly shot at them.

“These kids were no longer on the property by the time the homeowner arrived,” Jacki Kelley, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, KDVR. “They were in the car writing a note on a public roadway. So any threat that he thought he may have to deal with was no longer on his property.”

Kelley signaled that the boys would not be charged.

“There’s nothing about this that appears to be malicious, with any intent to commit crimes when they jumped over that fence and went to contact that homeowner,” she told the station. “It doesn’t exist as far as we can tell. So likely not going to be charging these kids with trespassing.”

Metz, whose term on the Mountain View Town Council is set to end in 2027, was charged with assault, felony menacing, illegal discharge of a firearm, and reckless endangerment.

The Town Council did not immediately return Law&Crime’s request for comment.

Jail records did not list Metz as being in custody as of Thursday afternoon.

Court records indicate Metz has a hearing scheduled for Sept. 17.
